Lesson 3 – Dividing using the division sign

Objective:

At the end of this lesson, student should be able to divide numbers using the division sign comfortably.

Division means Sharing. We divide using the division (÷) symbol.

Any number divided by 1 is the number itself. For example         7 ÷ 1 = 7

If 7 apples are shared by one person, the person would get all the apples.

Any number divided by itself gives 1 as the answer e.g.  4 ÷ 4 = 1

If 4 apples are divided among 4 pupils, each will get 1 apple.

Example 1

Here are 12 candies. let’s divide them among 4 children.

This reads as 12 divided by 4 equals 3. It means each child has 3 sweets.

Example 2

If         6 x 2 = 12                  and                 12 ÷ 6 = 2

It means 12 ÷ 2 = 6,  hence, 12 ÷ 6 = 2

3 x 8 = 24

So, 24 ÷ 8 = 3        and       24 ÷ 3 = 8

4 x 12 = 48

So, 48 ÷ 4 = 12      and      48 ÷ 12 = 4
