Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, students should be able to identify times that are half-past any given hour.
Most clock faces have numbers from 1 to 12. Also there are usually small or tiny strokes between the numbers. Each stroke is equal to one minute.
Therefore, there are five strokes = 5 minutes between any 2 numbers on the clock face.
For instance, from 12-1, there are 5 minutes. From 6-7=5 minutes.
To find half-past of any particular hour, there is the need to count in fives from 12 until we arrive at 30.
Example:
To show half past 10 on the clock,
From the example above, the time on the clock’s face is half past 10 or 10 : 30.
Using the counting method, from
12 – 1 = 5 minutes
1 – 2 = 5 minutes
2 – 3 = 5 minutes
3 – 4 = 5 minutes
4 – 5 = 5 minutes
5 – 6 = 5 minutes.
5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 30 minutes.
Note that, it is half past a number only if the short hand (hour hand) is pointing half-way between the 1st and 2nd number while the long hand (minute hand) is pointing to 6.
Example 2
What time is shown on the clock face?
The time is Half-past 2 or 2 : 30. Note that, the hour hand is between 2 and 3.
