Lesson 6 – Word Problem Involving Multiplication

Objective:

  • At the end of this lesson, students should be able to solve story or word problems involving multiplication.

In this lesson we will learn how to use multiplication in our everyday activities.

Example 1

Three students were taught some poems. Each student learnt 25 poems. How many poems were learned in all?

Solution

Number of students = 3

Number of poems learnt in all = 25 x 3

∴ 75 poems were learnt in all

Example 2

There are 6 boxes of apples. Each box contains 56 apples. How many are there in all the boxes?

Number of boxes = 6

Number of apples in each box = 56

Number of apples in all = 56 x 6

∴ There are 336 apples in all.

Example 3

We wanted to buy 7 cakes for John’s birthday. Each cake cost 64 pence. How much will the 7 cakes cost?

Number of cakes = 7

Cost of a cake = 64 pence

Cost of 7 cakes = 64 x 7

∴ 7 cakes will cost 448 pence or £ 4.48
