Lesson 1 – The Clock

Lesson
Materials

Objectives:

At the end of this lesson, students should be able to read and write the time.

The clock is used to tell the time. Time can be measured in hours, minutes and seconds.

Below is a clock.

The clock above has two hands. The long hand and the short hand.

The short hand which is also known as the Hour Hand tells or measures time in hours whiles the longer hand also called the minute hand measures time in minutes.

The two hands on the clock, help each other tell the time. When the short hand moves 60 times, the short hand moves once.

That means;

60 minutes = 1 hour

1 hour = 60 minutes.

When the long hand is on 12 and the short hand is on any other number, we say “that number O’clock”.

Example 1

When the long hand is on 12 and the short hand is on 3, it can be read as 3 O’clock.

Example 2

When the long hand is on 12 and the short hand is on 6, it is 6 O’clock.

Unit 9 Lesson 1: Exercise 2

Time can also be written in a different way. This is the digital way of reading the time. The digital time is written with a colon and two zeros.

Examples:

  1. 2 O’clock can also be written as 2 : 00
  2. 5 O’clock = 5 : 00
  3. 1 O’clock = 1 : 00

Now try these.

Write the times on the clock face in the digital boxes at the side. The first has been done for you.
